Review of the Psychophysiologic Aspects of Platelets

Abstract
There have been done two types of psychophysiologic researches on platelets : the one is on the platelet activation and its pathogenetic mechanisms which have been shown to be in the center of hemostasis, thrombosis and the resulting development
of
coronary artery deseases(CAD). And the other is on the function of platelets as a peripheral marker or index of the central nervous system, suing the radioimmunoassay(RIA) of the 5-HT receptors of platelets, and consequent neurophysiologic
interpretation of depression or physiology of stress reactions.
Various psychopathologies including depression and stress reactions have been thought to contribute to the activation of platelets and the development of cardiovascular disorders or aftercoming cornary events as complications. In this regrads,
some
standardization in the laboratory procedures, especially in the procedure of blood sampling and of wound-induced platelet activation, should be considered seriously.
On account of the excellent similarity between the serotonin transport mechenisms in platelets and in nerve terminals, the use of platelets as a nerve terminal model for serotonin is well documented. But the syntheses of serotonin and monoamine
oxidase
in the platelets are different from those in the brain, so these differences are thought to have some effects on the function as a peripheral index, and much attention should be paid to these areas. For platelets are shown to have a few types of
5-HT
receptor, it would be of great interest to delineate fur then details of the functions of each receptor in the future studies.
Clinical correlations should be investigated between depression and wound induced platelet activation, and between status of depressive illness and 5-HT2 receptor binding (Bmax) of platelets.
